The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core issue, was not quick to announce he would live there right away after his victory in November.

"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing all of my focus on enacting the platform on affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will forever remain inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment very different than his modest Astoria home.

With its cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's historical period.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
