What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.
Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
