The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for the Spanish giants, featuring five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," said the player after his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to represent either country at senior international level.

According to international regulations, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club chase future success.

Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the win at Manchester.
