The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Season on BBC

Line of Duty cast members
Vicky McClure are set to reprise their characters in the popular police drama

The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.

The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
