Each time a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
