Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Firefight at Nigerian School

Violent incident at school
Schools in Nigeria's northern region have often been targeted for militant organizations

Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The armed faction invaded the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their dormitory, an official report indicated.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Community members informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.

The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and vigilante groups" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.

In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The assault in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.

Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has worsened considerably in recent months, with educational institutions experiencing the greatest impact of the unrest.
