Prison Surprise: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He battled justice and the law won.

Two months subsequent to receiving a 27-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” Brazil’s political system, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last appears headed to prison.

Anticipated Jailing

The found-guilty plotter – who has been under residential detention in his estate while a series of court processes and appeals unfold – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the next few days, amidst mounting speculation that he will be moved to a well-known maximum security prison.

Previous Statements on Inmates

Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the far-right former paratrooper showed scant compassion for the country's inmates.

“What’s the need to offer these lowlifes a good life?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be fucked, period. That’s what I reckon.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to finish behind bars, all you have to do is not rape, abduction or theft.”

Prison Location Speculation

However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, a group of four this week visited the prison in an obvious bid to discourage the high court from transferring him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, stated he predicted the 70-year-old politician to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe digestive issues – the result of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 presidential campaign – meant it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He will not be able to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” he added, who also expressed concern about overcrowded cells and the quality of inmate food.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells holding forty inmates: “That is virtually one square meter per prisoner.

“We talked to the prisoners and they grumble, of course, of the horrible cuisine,” added the senator.

Allies Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the only voice voicing opinions ahead of the ex-leader's expected incarceration.

Writing in a leading publication, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” public service and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the greatest unfairness in its past”.

“This is an injustice that gnaws the souls of millions of Brazilians,” he stated.

Varied General Response

This could be accurate considering the substantial following Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. However his predicted jailing has also warmed the feelings of many other people who think he deserves to be imprisoned for planning to prevent the elected leader from becoming president – and even plotting to have him killed.

The lawmaker, a politician for the incumbent leader's political party, stated: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to obtain proper care – but dignified treatment behind bars. He must not continue being his self-appointed guard for his whole life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long celebrating the tough conditions of prisoners, had suddenly become aware to their entitlements. “Recently has the far-right – which has always asserted that basic rights should not be for criminals – chosen to visit a penitentiary to learn what situations are truly like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a offender,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, demeaning handling”.

Likely Prison Environment

Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which presently contains about fourteen thousand inmates, his more likely location seems to be a nearby prison for officers and other “special” detainees known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

Its cells are far more pleasant than those in the main prison, although still a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the stunning official residence, approximately a short distance away.

According to sources, the room Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – approximately the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 sq metre bathroom with a water facility and a 12 sq metre balcony. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a TV and also a minibar in his cell as long as they were supplied by his family,” the report indicated.

Political Reactions

Senator Lucas condemned the speculated proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his outcome in the {
