Israelis commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace talks proceed
People have come together across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.
The attack saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities delayed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the families of people killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the plan.
A senior representative knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an late session of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the deal.
He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to narrow the disparities between the both parties.
Essential Points in Discussions
- A permanent truce
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance provision
- Post-war management of the area
Citizen Feeling
In the city's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the assault on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place feels like home any longer and until every captive are released not a single person will be secure."
"After we see all home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence recover," she added.
Near the prime minister's residence in the capital, people assembled to express their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.
Protester a participant stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of the population prefer the war to conclude in return for the freedom of the hostages.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of the music event, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the dusk arrives, the dread appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, described.
"We are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my smallest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had accepted the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis said additional dead people had been transported. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the south region, medical staff reported.
