I'm a Committed Free-Market Advocate, But Universal Medicare Is the Best Solution for American Health System

Deductibles. In-network. Non-preferred providers. Premium health services. Personal healthcare costs. Fixed payment. Co-insurance. Benefit advisers. Coverage agents. Healthcare consultants. ACA. HMO. PPO. Exclusive Provider Organization. POS. HDHP. HSA. Flexible Spending Account. HRA. Explanation of Benefits. Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. SHOP. Single coverage. Family coverage. Premium tax credits.

Confused? It's understandable. Who comprehends this complex system? Certainly not the average business owner. Neither the average worker. Choosing the right healthcare insurance for companies – or for our families – seems like demands a PhD in medical insurance.

Our Medical System Isn't Just Complicated, It Is Expensive

Based on recent research, the average family pays $twenty-seven thousand annually on medical coverage (up 6% from last year). The average employer health insurance cost is expected to exceed $17,000 for each worker by 2026, an increase of 9.5% compared to 2025.

Now the government is shut down because political disagreements over tax credits which analysts predict will lead to premium increases up to 100% for numerous US citizens.

When Will We Seriously Consider Universal Healthcare?

When will we genuinely evaluate a national health insurance program in the United States? I'm convinced we're getting closer since this can't continue.

I'm not suggesting national healthcare. I'm advocating that our already existing Medicare program – an established insurance framework – simply expand to cover everyone. Our infrastructure doesn't change. How medical professionals receive payment changes. Believe me, they'll adapt.

How National Health Insurance Would Work

Universal healthcare coverage would need contributions from employees and employers. In comparable systems, an employee earning average wages must contribute about five point three percent to their healthcare. Their employer pays about 13.75%.

Does this seem expensive? Not if you contrast it to what average US resident spends. I know dozens of businesses who are easily contributing anywhere from eight to fifteen percent of payroll costs for medical benefits. Remember that in inclusive programs, these contributions include retirement benefits, sick pay, parental benefits and job loss protection along with funding healthcare facilities. When you add those costs compared with what we pay on retirement programs, unemployment insurance and vacation benefits, the difference decreases.

Execution for America

For America, a national health premium would raise existing Medicare taxes, a system already established. It should be means-based – those at higher income levels would pay more than those earning less. There would be both an employee and company payments. And, like much of federal military, IT, welfare services and infrastructure, the program should be outsourced to third-party administrators rather than federal agencies.

Advantages for Entrepreneurs

Universal healthcare coverage would be a huge benefit for small businesses like mine. It would place us on a level playing field with our larger competitors that can pay for superior coverage. It would render administration much easier (a payroll deduction processed similarly to social security and healthcare taxes, rather than individual transactions to benefit firms and insurance providers).

It would enable simpler to plan expenses our yearly costs, instead of going through the complicated (and fruitless) theater of negotiating with major insurers required annually each year. Due to simplification, there would exist a better understanding of coverage among workers – as opposed to the current system where they have to decipher the complexities of current options. Additionally there would definitely exist less liability for employers since we wouldn't have access to workers' medical records for risk assessment and different options.

Capitalist Perspective

I'm as pro-market as possible. However I recognize that government play important functions in our lives, from providing defense to supporting needed infrastructure. Ensuring medical coverage for everyone via universal healthcare enhances economic foundations. It represents superior, simpler approach for entrepreneurs which hire more than half of the country's workers and generate half of our GDP. It enables employees to be healthier, have better attendance and be more productive.

Considering Challenges

Are there a million considerations I'm not addressing? Certainly. Given all the healthcare cost increases experienced in recent years, it's clear that current healthcare legislation isn't functioning effectively. I understand that America isn't a compact European nation where big changes can be readily adopted. But expanding universal Medicare, despite increased taxation required, would still be a better and less expensive approach for not only controlling healthcare costs but providing access for all citizens.

Need for Realistic Evaluation

As Americans, must reduce our own arrogance. America's medical care isn't so great. We rank significantly behind numerous nations in healthcare quality globally, according to major studies. Maybe one positive aspect amid current situation is that we take serious examination in the mirror and agree that major reforms need to happen.
