Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Context for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.
