The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
